Smith Lake is located in north central Alabama approximately 20 miles northwest of Birmingham, Alabama. Smith Lake spans 3 counties, Cullman, Walker and Winston and covers or 21,000 acres.

Smith Lake Park

Smith Lake Park is owned and operated by Cullman County. The park is located on Smith Lake and is a hub of activity for fishing, boating, camping, skiing and tourism in the area. The park offers something for every type of camper. There are over 200 tent and RV campsites or you can rent one of the lake front cabins that are available.

The park has a number of attractions and activities. Children of all ages love the spiral waterslide and swimming pool during the summer. There are antique car shows, a fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day festival and many other activities throughout the year.

Directions

Take I-65 Exit #304, go south on County Road 437 toward Jasper for about 5 miles.

Turn right onto County Road 813. Go about 2 miles.

Turn left on County Road 385 and follow the signs to Smith Lake Park.

Smith Lake Fishing

Like other lakes in Alabama, Smith Lake is home to Bass, Bream, Crappie and Catfish that lie along the shoreline in the rocks and fallen trees. Smith Lake is a deep lake, over 300 feet in some areas. If you don't have your own gear or supplies you will find several full service marinas in the area that have boat rentals with fishing and boating equipment.

There are over 500 miles of shoreline to fish from so finding a perfect spot isn't a problem. Black bass, largemouth and spotted bass are common catches in Smith Lake and “Monster” striped bass exist in the 40 pound + range. Popular areas around the lake are Dismal Creek, Brushy Creek and Rock Creek.

Vacation Rentals

As discussed above there are many vacation rentals available at Smith Lake. Many of the rentals are lake front cabins. There are also Condominiums and Bed and Breakfast Inns for rent that provide a wonderful view of the lake. The rates are reasonable but you can expect to pay more for holiday weekends. The rentals are available year round and many of the larger lake from homes hold from 10 to 16 people.

Hotels Near Lake Smith

If you don’t need to stay on Lake Smith, there are plenty of hotels in nearby Cullman. Cullman is about 7 miles away from Smith Lake Park and offers standard hotel rates for all visitors. In Cullman you can find a Days Inn, Best Western Fairwinds Inn, Comfort Suites, Hampton Inn and a Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites.
